JERICHO - Police say a man was killed and two other people were hurt, one of them seriously, after a wrong-way crash on the Long Island Expressway early yesterday. The crash happened at around 4:15 a.m. by northbound exit 41 in Jericho. Police say a black Honda was headed eastbound in the westbound lanes on the Expressway. Investigators say they believe the driver entered on an exit ramp and drove into oncoming traffic for at least one exit. Police say the Honda crashed head-on into a Mercedes Benz and the 23-year-old male driver was killed at the scene. His female passenger had to be extricated from the car by EMS workers. She suffered multiple internal injuries and was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in serious condition. The 49-year-old male driver of the Mercedes was hospitalized in "stable but guarded condition," according to investigators.All westbound lanes were closed for hours this morning as police worked to investigate. The Expressway has since been reopened.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released. Police say the investigation is continuing.
