Police: 1 dead, 1 injured after crash, fire in N. Massapequa

NORTH MASSAPEQUA - Police say one person has died in a house fire and one person was seriously injured in a crash involving a responding patrol car in North Massapequa.

According to police, two officers in a police cruiser were responding to a house fire on North Suffolk Avenue around 9:20 a.m.

That is when police say a female driver collided with the cruiser after going through a stop sign at the intersection of Broadway and New York Avenue.

Police say the driver then lost control of her vehicle and struck a pedestrian who was walking in front of a store.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital in serious in condition. The two officers involved in the crash are listed in stable condition.

According to police, a 79-year-old wheelchair-bound male that was inside the home at the time of the house fire has died. His identity has not been released.

Sources say the 79-year-old victim was the person who called 911, telling operators that he was home alone and trapped inside.

Neighbors say the victim and his wife lived on the block for about 50 years.
