RIVERHEAD - A man convicted of murdering an East Patchogue father during a robbery accepted a plea deal at his sentencing today.

Terraine Slide, 20, was sentenced to 25 years for manslaughter in the shooting death of Carlton Shaw.

Prosecutors say in May 2007, Slide and several other teens wanted to burglarize Shaw's East Patchogue home, but when Shaw saw them in his backyard, Slide pulled a gun and shot him.

Detectives say Shaw's 3-year-old son was in the house at the time and was discovered sleeping on his father's lifeless body.

Slide's mother, Darleen New, doesn't believe her son shot anyone and says she's unhappy with his sentence.

Shaw worked three jobs in order to support his family, while his common-law wife, Griselda Amaya, worked as a housekeeper. Their home has since gone into foreclosure after Amaya was unable to carry the mortgage on her own.
