HUNTINGTON - Family and friends of a young girl who was among three children killed in a tragic boat accident over the summer are trying to make sure her memory lives on.

Victoria Gaines was aboard a boat that carried 27 people to view fireworks on the Fourth of July. The boat capsized and three children were lost at sea, including 9-year-old Victoria.

The Victoria Gaines Playground is expected to open this spring at the Washington Primary School in Huntington, where the young girl attended school. The idea was hatched by one of Victoria's closest friends since kindergarten, Emily Geller.

Geller started selling lemonade to help pay for the playground project, but more money was needed. A fundraiser for the playground is being held today at the Neraki Mediterranean Grill in Huntington and could bring in as much as $50,000.

Equipment for the playground has already been donated and the plan is to break ground on the project once the weather warms up.
