Plans to build a new Wal-Mart store in East Patchogue were rejected Monday at a Brookhaven town meeting.

EAST PATCHOGUE - A plan to build a Wal-Mart in East Patchogue was rejected by the Brookhaven Town Board Monday.

Many residents tell News 12 Long Island they are relieved with the news. Neighbors who live near the proposed site on Hospital Road say they were worried about traffic and property values going down.

Local business owners were also concerned they would lose customers to the large store.

Bill Wertz, a spokesman for Wal-Mart, says they are disappointed the application was turned down. He said that some residents were in favor of the project, as it would create jobs and bring affordable shopping to the town. Wertz said the company is going to evaluate the decision and look at their options.
