SOUTHAMPTON - A new home approved to be built in the historic district of Southampton has angered neighborhood residents.

Residents living on Meadow Lane in Southampton were irate that the Village Board of Historic Preservation and Architectural Review approved plans to build a tall, modern style home in their shine-styled, cottage-themed historic district.

“It would stand out like a sore thumb. It would loom over the entire historic district,” said Philip Howard, a Southampton resident.

Neighbors say the original plans for the home included a traditional design. They say the board approved the new home in June.

After a two and a half-hour meeting, the board has asked lawyers for the home owners to present further plans. The process is expected to take several weeks.

Residents told News 12 that they would like to see the historic ambiance of Southampton preserved.
