Plan to revive old yacht club meets resistance

WATER MILL - An effort to revive an old neighborhood sailing club in the Hamptons is running into opposition as local residents fear a new club would disrupt their quiet, private lifestyles.

Jeff Mansfield, who says he used to spend summers developing his love of sailing on Mecox Bay in Water Mill, wants to reopen an old yacht club and pass on his love of sailing to future generations.

But some residents who live down the road from the boathouse on Bay Lane are completely against it. They don't want to see the yacht club's rebirth and are fighting it every step of the way.

The Mecox Bay Civic Association, which opposes the reopening of the yacht club, is suing the Town of Southampton, which owns the park land, in order to stop Mansfield's plan.

The Town of Southampton declined to talk about the case.
