LONG ISLAND - A plan to build a gaming facility in Medford is facing opposition.

A Brookhaven civic association say it does not want a casino right off the Long Island Expressway.

The 35-acre plot of land is near exit 64 of the service road of the LIE.

Some residents hope a casino would bring in revenue. But some residents are opposed, saying they have traffic concerns and think the casino may bring an increase in crime.

Right now, nearby land that could be expanded upon is zoned for residential use. The Town of Brookhaven is considering changing it to commercial use, and considering changing town code to allow casino gaming to be part of that commercial use.

The land is the former site of a movie multiplex.

The Town of Brookhaven will hold a public hearing Aug. 12 to speak on the issue of allowing the owning changes.
