Pilot injured in Shelter Island plane crash

Shelter Island police say a small plane crashed near an airstrip Monday evening. They say an 80-year-old pilot was taking off just after 6 p.m.

There is no word on what the problem with the plane was.

SHELTER ISLAND - Shelter Island police say a small plane crashed near an airstrip Monday evening.

They say an 80-year-old pilot was taking off just after 6 p.m. when the Cessna crashed nose first.

There is no word on what the problem with the plane was.

Police say the pilot was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital. He is in critical but stable condition, with chest and leg injuries.
