Pharmacy heist sheds light on pill abuse among students

HUNTINGTON STATION - Last month's pharmacy robbery in Farmingville is raising new concerns over pain pill addictions among high school students.

As News 12 Long Island has reported, police say 22-year-old Patrick O'Donnell stole hundreds of oxycodone pills from a local CVS. His attorney says O'Donnell has been hooked on painkillers since they were first prescribed to him following a high school wrestling injury.

According to some drug counselors, a big part of the problem is the amount of pressure put on young athletes. However, many doctors admit the medical community is also at fault. They say doctors are often writing unnecessary prescriptions at too high a dosage.
