HEMPSTEAD - A pharmacist accused of illegally filling dozens of prescriptions for addictive painkillers was arraigned today in Hempstead.

Prosecutors say Lutful Chawdhury forged prescriptions for powerful painkillers such as Oxycodone, one of which was given to a Freeport woman, Kayla Gerdes, who allegedly hit and killed a 69-year-old woman last year.

Chawdhury's attorney, Arshad Majid, says his client is innocent.

"We don't believe he's committed any crime here," says Majid. "He's a licensed pharmacist, been in compliance with law the whole time."
