Parents, students rally to save Catholic schools set to be closed

FARMINGDALE - More than 100 parents and students rallied outside St. John the Baptist De LaSalle School in Farmingdale to protest the planned closure of the school.

The school is one of six Long Island Catholic schools slated to be closed at the end of the school year.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre says that declining enrollment is the cause for the closures."We understand it's important to make money," says Rick Pinto. "But we also understand it's more important to educate our children."

The parents say they are also upset that the diocese is leaving their calls and letters about the school closures unanswered.

The other five schools slated to be closed are St. Ignatius Loyola School in Hicksville, Prince of Peace Regional School in Sayville, Sacred Heart School in North Merrick, St. Catherine of Siena School in Franklin Square and Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Lindenhurst.
