HEMPSTEAD - Parents and students rallied outside Hempstead High School ahead of next week's school budget vote.

Many parents and community leaders say they're not happy with the direction the district is headed. Hempstead School District is facing heat after slashing $3 million from its proposed budget and firing a number of staff members. There are also plans to consolidate schools, all of which need approval from the state.

But parents at today's rally say the community has been left out of the conversation.

Fatimah Jeffries-El, a PTA representative, says the school board must stop creating high-paying administrative positions and focus on the needs of students. High school students told News 12 Long Island that they'd also like to see changes in the classroom.
