WESTHAMPTON - Parents in Westhampton say they want the town to change the speed zone near a local school following a minibus accident this week.
Cars whiz by at 55 mph in front of BOCES on County Road 31, making for one of the most dangerous school zones in Long Island, according to some parents.
The issue came to a head on Wednesday, when a BOCES minibus was broadsided outside the Westhampton Learning Center, leaving three children and three adults shaken up.
However, county officials claim that until now, no one at BOCES has requested the area be designated a school safety zone.
BOCES Deputy Superintendent Julie Lutz says she can neither confirm nor deny that officials failed to request a school zone sign, but says changes are on the way.
The Suffolk County Public Works Department says it's considering slowing down the speed limit in the school area and/or installing school safety zone signs in the near future.
