WOODBURY - ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says he expects the United States combat mission in Afghanistan to wrap up next year.

Panetta said the goal is to transition from a combat role to a training role by the middle of 2013.

The transition will come a year before the withdrawal deadline set by President Obama.

There is no word yet on how long troops would be required to stay after the combat mission ends.
