Pair of Leandra's Law arrests mar LI weekend

CENTRAL ISLIP - Two Long Islanders are facing Leandra's Law charges after allegedly driving drunk this weekend with children in their cars.

Police say Igor Nadia, 38, was arrested Sunday afternoon for speeding on Sunrise Highway in West Babylon. They say he appeared to be drunk and had his 15-year-old son in the car, upgrading his original DWI charge to felony aggravated DWI.

Zona Taylor, 43, of Bellport, was arrested for drunken driving Saturday in Patchogue. Police say her 8-year-old daughter and two grandchildren were in the car, and that she ran off with them after crashing on Montauk Highway.

The children were not seriously hurt.

State Sen. Charles Fuschillo (R-Merrick) is trying to strengthen Leandra's Law by requiring tougher ignition interlock provisions for DWI offenders. His bill has already passed the state Senate and is now heading to the Assembly.
