PATCHOGUE - The family of a little girl with a rare disease says medical marijuana has drastically improved her condition.
The Pagano family of Patchogue says their 4-year-old daughter Beyla spent two months in the hospital for severe seizures. Born premature, the preschooler has had 27 brain surgeries to date.
For about 6 months, Beyla has been taking hemp oil, also known as CBD.
“It's a derivative of marijuana,” says Craig Pagano, Beyla’s father. “It has no THC. It doesn't get my daughter high on anything, but it mellows out her seizures.”
The family says it spends about $800 a month for hemp oil because insurance doesn't cover the cost of medical marijuana in New York yet. In about 18 months, the state will implement recently passed medical marijuana laws.
The Paganos say Beyla's therapist has also seen a difference in her motor skills and her overall confidence since she started taking the drug.
