NEW HYDE PARK - Several out-of-state utility workers are being hailed as heroes.

According to police, the workers stopped an alleged purse snatcher from robbing a New Hyde Park couple in their 80s. The incident happened yesterday morning on Jericho Turnpike near Ingram Lane.

Police say Brian Maher grabbed the handbag from an 80-year-old woman. Her 82-year-old husband fell trying to stop Maher from getting away.

Robbie Jarman, a utility worker from Mississippi, says he and two other utility workers, Brent Bernard and Lee Snoddy, saw the incident, chased down Maher and held him until police arrived. They also stayed with the couple until the cops came.

Both victims are expected to be OK. Maher was arraigned on two counts of second-degree robbery.
