GORDON HEIGHTS - A plan to donate housing in troubled neighborhoods to homeless veterans is garnering opposition from lawmakers who say such areas are already saturated with group homes and subsidized housing.

The homes are in low-income areas like Gordon Heights and Central Islip.

Opponents say the county needs to stop targeting the same areas when donating homes to nonprofit organizations.

The nonprofits do not pay property taxes, according to Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning. When many properties do not pay taxes in the same area, she says that it negatively affects the surrounding school district.

All of the homes that would be donated were seized by the county due to unpaid property taxes.
