NORTH HEMPSTEAD - Spring cleaning is in full swing and today starts Operation Clean Sweep in the Town of North Hempstead.
Operation Clean Sweep was created in 2004 by Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and has taken place every year since.
During the two weeks of cleaning, all town streets in the unincorporated areas south and north of the LIE will be cleaned.
The town says it will have 13 street sweepers and cleaners out on the roads with the goal of cleaning over 520 miles of the Town of North Hempstead.
Officials say since the program's inception, it has removed tens of thousands of tons of garbage and debris.
Last year 2,500 tons of debris was collected from the streets.
