CENTRAL ISLIP - Opening statements began today in the trial of a man accused of planting a pipe bomb in a Huntington Home Depot.

Former Home Depot employee Daniel Sheehan, 50, is on trial for allegedly planting a pipe bomb in the lighting section of the store. Prosecutors say a disgruntled Sheehan demanded $2 million and threatened in letters to detonate three devices in three different stores.

The jury listened to two audio recordings of phone calls Sheehan allegedly made to Home Depot store manager Andrew Salvoni.

Salvoni testified today that he was scared for his employees, customers and family.

Sheehan's attorney says the defendant was battling depression and never intended for the device to work.

Sheehan faces a minimum of 30 years in federal prison if convicted of using a destructive device in an extortion plot.
