HEMPSTEAD - Hempstead Village officials held what was advertised as an anti-violence rally this afternoon, but attendees say it looked and sounded more like an effort to re-elect President Barack Obama. Police officers and politicians made speeches at an anti-violence rally today but provided very few specifics on how they would combat the scourge of youth violence. Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall called on Congress to enact stricter gun laws and said he would try to keep the schools open later so that kids would have a place to go. Despite his ideas and suggestions, onlookers say the event felt more like an Obama rally than anything else. Hall says there have been seven murders in Hempstead so far this year. There were a total of eight murders last year.
