MASSAPEQUA - An oil tanker went up in flames in Massapequa Sunday morning, prompting evacuations in the immediate area.

The fire broke out at around 10 a.m. on Merrick Road between Bayview Avenue and Cedar Shore Drive, near St. Rose of Lima Church and a children's Catholic school.

The 10-wheel truck was carrying about 4,000 gallons of home heating oil when the fire sparked. Some of the oil spilled into the street.

Merrick Road was blocked off in the area while crews battled the flames. The fire was quickly extinguished by four responding fire departments, but crews were in the area throughout the afternoon to cleanup the spilled fuel.

The incident came hours after the Massapequa Fire Department had a training session on how to respond to incidents involving hazardous materials.

No one was injured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
