MELVILLE - Officials say a suspected carjacking in Melville today turned out to be a hoax.

Investigators say that a white Honda was stopped by Suffolk sheriffs deputies during a routine traffic stop on Pinelawn Road and during the stop, the driver, 23-year-old David Evanson, of Deer Park, got out of the car and fled. The three passengers claimed they were victims of a carjacking, sparking a manhunt for Evanson.

Deputies caught Evanson about a half-mile away on Old East Neck Road.

Officials say that they later determined the carjacking story was concocted to cover for Evanson, who had an open arrest warrant for resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.

Evanson is charged with fleeing an officer and multiple traffic violations. The three passengers in the vehicle were charged with falsely reporting an incident.
