AMITYVILLE - Officials on Long Island are on heightened alert in the wake of the mass shooting in Florida.

Both the Nassau County and Suffolk County police departments say they are intensifying patrols in response to the shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. Officials say 50 people were killed and 53 others were injured, making it the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Authorities say there has been no specific threat to Long Island, but officials are asking residents to be vigilant.

"That's the most likely way to prevent terrorist attack -- if people are vigliant and speak up,"  says Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini. "The old addage, if you see something say something."

Nassau police said in a statement, "The Nassau County Police Department is intensifying patrols around all areas of public gatherings, critical infrastructure and request that our residents call the police immediately if they observe anything threatening or suspicious."

Rep. Peter Kings says the FBI will run every lead on the shooter, and look into his possible radical Islamic leanings. "It's important to realize we're all Americans right now, whether you're black, white, straight, or gay, ISIS wants to kill us," he said.
