LONG BEACH - The mumps outbreak in Nassau County appears to be growing.

The state Health Department says the number of mumps cases being investigated in Long Beach is now approaching 50.

Officials say there are now 30 confirmed cases and 17 probable cases.

According to the Health Department, the majority of those affected had been vaccinated. Many who have become sickened are in their 20s and may not display symptoms for up to 25 days.

Health officials say to avoid sharing drinks, utensils or personal items when out with a group of friends.

In addition, they also say the majority of the patients have now been fully vaccinated with two doses of the MMR shot.
