WEST BABYLON - Officials say it has been determined that the discharge of Mace is what caused the fumes that forced the evacuation of West Babylon High School Tuesday.

In a statement, West Babylon Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly said it was determined that two high school students discharged the Mace into a hallway.

Officials say there is no threat to the health and safety of students and staff.

In addition, school officials say the individuals responsible for the incident will face appropriate disciplinary actions.

About 35 students and staff were taken to the hospital with difficulty breathing and complaining of the strange smell.

Deputy Commissioner Tim Sini couldn't say if the discharge of chemicals was intentional or accidental.

Classes were back in session Wednesday.
