RONKONKOMA - Authorities say a Suffolk County sheriff's deputy patrolling the Long Island Expressway this evening hit and killed a driver who had parked his car in the HOV lane. It happened just before 6 p.m. by exit 60 in Ronkonkoma. Police say the driver, 18-year-old William Schettino, had stopped his 2011 Mazda in the HOV lane and exited his car. That's when a deputy driving a marked cruiser approached. The deputy spotted the car and tried to avoid it, but struck the driver, who was still out of his vehicle. Schettino, who lived in Blue Point, was hospitalized and later pronounced dead.Westbound lanes on the highway were closed for hours as police investigated. The sheriff's department says evening sun glare is believed to have played a role in the crash, but the investigation is continuing.It remains unclear why Shettino had stopped and exited his car.
