HEMPSTEAD - Officials say a house fire in Hempstead Thursday morning has been deemed suspicious.

Nassau County arson investigators say the fire that broke out at 154 Long Beach Road may have been intentionally set.

James Hickman, of the Nassau Fire Marshall's Office, says the fire appears suspicious due to a combination of elements they are examining in conjunction with interviews and reports.

He says officials are interviewing neighbors to see who might have started the fire and why.

Officials say it appears the fire started in the living room area on the first floor.

It is not clear how many people were inside the house when the flames broke out, but police say three adults made it out unharmed. They also say a young girl who was in the house escaped, but sustained injuries. The girl was taken to Nassau University Medical Center and is expected to be OK.

It is believed that the people inside of the house may have been squatters.
