FIRE ISLAND - ? Officials have surveyed the damage on Fire Island and say it could have been a lot worse. There was no major damage to homes on the barrier island, and there were no actual breaks in the beach. However, in some spots the protective dunes were washed away. Irene did cause major flooding on Fire Island where water rose up to the front steps of homes in Ocean Beach Village. The walking path on Surf View Walk is submerged all the way to the bay. Tourists were evacuated from Fire Island before Irene arrived. Chopper 12 was over Fire Island this morning where some homes are still surrounded by water.
