ROSLYN - Officials say eight undocumented immigrants who already had been convicted of sex crimes have been arrested again, five of them on Long Island.

Federal immigration agents made the arrests last week.

Among those now in federal custody are a Dominican man and a Guatemalan man, both arrested in Freeport, and both with prior attempted rape convictions.

There is also an Ecuadorian man with a prior sex abuse conviction who was arrested in Roslyn, a Honduran man convicted of attempted forcible touching arrested in Hempstead, and a Salvadoran man arrested in Patchogue with a forcible touching conviction.

They are all now facing deportation.

Many Long Islanders who spoke with News 12 applauded the arrests, including a local congressman.

"I am very pleased that ICE took this action," said Rep. Lee Zelden (R-Shirley). "It's a very important action that keeps our communities safer. These are individuals who shouldn't be here."

Even immigration advocates who oppose the recent crackdown on illegal immigration did not oppose the arrests.

"We can't defend the indefensible," said Louis Valenzuela, of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance.

But he added that recent ICE raids have scared immigrant communities.

"Children are afraid that they go to school, and when they return, their mom is not going to be home," he said.
