FREEPORT - A woman died in a fire inside her apartment at a complex in Freeport Thursday morning, fire officials say.

Chief Matthew Colgan says crews responded just after 10 a.m. after receiving a call about a fire at 15 North Bergen Place. He says they quickly determined that the source of the fire was an apartment on the first floor of the complex.

Coldan says they extinguished the fire and found the victim inside already deceased. Her name has not yet been released.

A Freeport firefighter, who broke his leg during the blizzard last weekend, lives in the building and assisted other tenants during the evacuation.

There were no other injuries during the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
