NORTH GREAT RIVER - A Suffolk County police officer is recovering after crashing into a downed utility pole while responding to the scene of an accident.

Police say a car crashed into a utility pole on Connetquot Avenue in North Great River at around 4 a.m., causing the pole to fall across the roadway.  They say the driver then left the scene.

While responding to the accident, police say the female police officer didn't see the pole in the roadway and slammed into it.  The officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Southside Hospital to recover.

Police say they are still searching for the driver in the initial crash.
