COMMACK - An off-duty Suffolk officer was killed in a tragic early morning collision with a garbage truck.

Authorities say Patrick Curley, a 17-year veteran of the force, was driving his SUV on Jericho Turnpike in Commack at around 3:30 a.m. when he collided with a garbage truck that was backing out of a parking lot. Curley was killed on impact.

This is the second time in nearly four years that a Second Precinct officer was killed in a car crash. Officer Glen Ciano was struck by a drunken driver in 2009 as he was responding to a call.

Suffolk police say it's too early to determine if alcohol played a role in this crash.

Curley is survived by his wife and young daughter.
