Obama renews push for payroll tax cut extension

President Barack Obama has made an appeal to the public this morning, asking people to pressure their members of Congress to extend the payroll tax

WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Barack Obama has made an appeal to the public this morning, asking people to pressure their members of Congress to extend the payroll tax cut.

"The last thing we need is for Washington to stand in the way of Americans' comeback," Obama said. "Washington shouldn't hike taxes on Americans right now. That's the wrong thing to do."

The tax cut is set to expire at the end of the month. If it is not extended, the White House says the average family would lose about $40 a paycheck. Today, the president said he wants taxpayers to use social media to tell lawmakers how they will use the money.

The U.S. House of Representatives could vote on the payroll tax measure this week.
