Obama demands quick action to raise debt limit

President Obama says failing to raise the debt ceiling would delay payments to veterans and social security recipients. (January 14, 2013)

WASHINGTON - President Obama put out a strong message to Republican opponents in Congress this afternoon during his last news conference of his first term.

Obama says the United States is posed for a good year in 2013 as long as politics do not get in the way on issues like the debt ceiling.

Obama says failing to raise the debt ceiling would delay payments to veterans and Social Security recipients.

Without an increase, Obama says the government would not have enough money to pay interest to debt holders or pay for all government programs.
