CENTRAL ISLIP - A veteran NYPD officer was in Central Islip court Thursday to face felony charges stemming from alleged sexting with a 16-year-old girl.

David Stagliano, of Ronkonkoma, is accused of sending a lewd video of himself to the teenager. According to court documents, the video was 21 seconds long. The documents also say Stagliano called the teen on her cellphone and was "groaning and grunting and was having phone sex with her."

Stagliano pleaded not guilty and was released on $5,000 bond.

Defense attorney Craig Hayes told News 12 Long Island that Stagliano is a 10-year veteran of the NYPD with an "impeccable service record." He says his client worked in the 13th Precinct before transferring to the department's Mounted Unit. Hayes also said that Stagliano is a Marine Corps veteran who was honorably discharged. He did not answer any questions related to the case.

"We make defenses in the courtroom, not in the media," says Hayes.

Stagliano has been suspended without pay and, if convicted, faces up to six months in jail and 10 years on probation. He would also have to register as a sex offender.

He is due back in court in early March.
