MANHATTAN - Officials are calling for new safety measures before the Statue of Liberty is reopened on the 4th of July.

Officials with the National Parks Service now want to screen visitors after they arrive at Ellis Island. Previously, tourists were required to go through metal detectors in Lower Manhattan and New Jersey before even boarding a boat.

Sen. Charles Schumer and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly both say those checkpoints should be put back into place.
