ISLIP - The governors of New York and New Jersey are calling for an independent investigation into Amtrak's problems with derailments at Penn Station.

"This comprehensive review should take into account the causes of recent failures at Penn Station and any needed changes to the processes by which routine maintenance and emergency repairs are performed," Govs. Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie said in a joint statement to Amtrak.

The issues began last Monday when a track problem caused a New Jersey Transit train to derail. Amtrak admitted it knew some of the wooden railroad track ties were slowly separating. A similar problem caused an Acela train to derail last month. The latest derailment caused daily headaches for both Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit commuters through Friday, when regular service had mostly resumed.

The LIRR carries an estimated 230,000 passengers to Penn Station daily.

Peter Haynes, of the LIRR Commuters Campaign believes Cuomo could still do more to take control of the problem.

"If I had it my way, I would give LIRR maintenance of the four East River tunnels," he said. "I think that would be a huge improvement over Amtrak doing it."
