WOODBURY - The National Rifle Association (NRA) is standing by its call to have armed guards positioned in U.S. schools in the wake of the Newtown massacre.

Appearing on NBC's 'Meet the Press,' Wayne LaPierre, executive VP and CEO of the NRA, said any new efforts by Congress to regulate guns or ammunition would not prevent mass shootings.

"I'm telling you what I think will make people safe and what every mom and dad will make them feel better," said LaPierre. "When they drop their kid off in school in January, if we have a police officer in that school, a good guy, that if some horrible monster tries to do something, they'll be there to protect them. "

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) says the NRA blames everything but guns for the nation's mass shootings.
