GLEN HEAD - A community is hoping for the best after an award-winning teacher was struck by a car Friday in Glen Head.

Authorities say 28-year-old Cruz Correa struck 64-year-old Christopher Whalley on Glen Cove Avenue, then slammed into another car carrying an unidentified couple. All four people were taken to the hospital.

Whalley's father tells News 12 Long Island that doctors were able to save his son's badly mangled foot. The popular North Shore High School Latin teacher is out of his first of many surgeries, and his students say they're hoping for a speedy recovery.

Authorities say Whalley was in the crosswalk and had the right of way at the time of the accident.

Correa has been charged with reckless driving. Newsday reports that detectives are trying to determine if Correa was driving while impaired, or if he ran a red light.

Meanwhile, Whalley is scheduled for another operation next week.
