MANHASSET - The North Hempstead Town Board voted unanimously last night to override the state's 2 percent tax cap.

The board needed a 60-percent majority for the move.

The original budget proposal requested only a 1.9 percent tax increase, but due to special budgets coming in higher than anticipated, it necessitated a tax increase over the state's tap allotment.

Issues that forced the increase included the expansion of the Great Neck garbage district and a community college subsidy the town had to pay.

Officials say taxes will not go up across the board but will increase district-by-district.
