WOODBURY - Long Island Muslim activists are supporting a lawsuit planned against New York City over an NYPD monitoring program that some say was out of line.Dr. Faroque Khan, of the Islamic Center of Long Island, says the NYPD and local police agencies went too far in their surveillance of the Muslim community. He says places of worship and businesses across the tri-state area were targeted, and now, a New Jersey Muslim group is taking legal action. Muslim Advocates, a civil rights group, is filing a lawsuit against New York City for the police department's actions. The group's suit seeks to have the surveillance declared unconstitutional and all the records destroyed. It also asks for an order prohibiting the NYPD from coming into New Jersey to spy on Muslims. Meanwhile, Khan says there are no planned lawsuits on Long Island, but he supports what those in New Jersey are doing.
