WOODBRIDGE, NJ - A New Jersey medical marijuana dispensary is in the process of submitting an application to New York state to operate on Long Island.

News 12 Long Island's health reporter Shari Einhorn got a rare look inside the Garden State Dispensary's warehouse, where medical marijuana is grown.

"Right now, we are looking to open a dispensary in Nassau County and we're looking to do a cultivation facility either in Suffolk or Nassau," says David Weisser, director of the Garden State Dispensary.

The Woodbridge, New Jersey company, which also grows and sells legalized medical marijuana in Colorado, says the laws on the books in New Jersey and New York are among the strictest in the country.

Twenty-three states plus the District of Columbia now have legalized medical marijuana. New York's program is scheduled to begin next January.

The company grows over 30 strains and is adding more every day. Weisser says it's a five-step process that starts by cloning the plants. The entire process from start to finish takes about 3.5 months.
