NIFA: Nassau's revised 2011 budget still not balanced

UNIONDALE - The oversight committee in charge of Nassau's finances met before a crowd of county legislators and union leaders today, announcing that the county's revised 2011 budget is still not balanced.

County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) has already eliminated more than 600 positions, redeployed police officers and privatized services, all in an effort to close a projected $176 million budget gap. However, the Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) says it's not enough.

NIFA also said it cannot yet make a recommendation on Mangano's $400 million plan to redevelop the Nassau Coliseum because it has yet to see all the numbers. The board says it will wait until Nassau residents vote on the project Aug. 1 to officially review it.
