NEWTOWN, Conn. - Relatives of Adam Lanza, the man accused of killing 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary school on Friday, are beginning to speak to the public and try to make sense of what brought on the tragedy.

"He was different, he was quiet," said Adam Lanza's aunt. "Nice kid, good kid."

She also said that her nephew was home-schooled and that he had previously battled with the school district.

"No words can truly express how heartbroken we are," said Lanza's father.

"We are in a state of disbelief, and trying to find whatever answers we can. We too are asking, 'Why?'"

The father of the gunman in the Connecticut school rampage says his family is saddened and struggling to make sense of what happened.

Peter Lanza says in a statement released late Saturday that "our family is grieving along with all those who have been affected by this enormous tragedy... No words can truly express how heartbroken we are..." The statement added that relatives are "in a state of disbelief and trying to find whatever answers we can."

An autopsy is being performed today on Adam Lanza's first victim: his mother, Nancy.
