WOODBURY - A spokesman for Nassau Executive Ed Mangano is denying reports claiming federal corruption charges will be filed against the county’s top official.

Newsday reports that Mangano could be charged as soon as Thursday. The report did not say specifically to what those charges may be related.

County spokesman Brian Nevin says the report is "rumor mill" and nonsense.

As News 12 Long Island has reported, questions have been raised since last fall about Mangano's relationship with indicted restaurateur Harendra Singh. Newsday reported last year that Mangano accepted free vacations and meals at Singh's restaurants in exchange for business deals. Mangano told News 12 last September that nothing illegal was happening.

Singh was charged with bribing an Oyster Bay official in exchange for loan guarantees. He has pleaded not guilty.

State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan says that while he was unaware of possible pending charges against Mangano, he says such situations are never good for the system or public trust.

"We have a judicial system that I still have faith in, and we'll have to see," Flanagan says. "But in any circumstances, a person is always innocent until proven guilty."

Later Wednesday, a spokesperson for Mangano told News 12, "County Executive Mangano has the highest integrity, has done nothing wrong, has not been contacted and the accusations are preposterous."

The U.S. attorney's office and an FBI spokeswoman say they have no information on any charges being brought against Mangano.
