WOODBURY - A new investigation reveals that Nassau County handed out nearly $10 million worth of contracts with little or no oversight.

According to Newsday, the hundreds of no-bid contracts were just below the $25,000-limit that would require scrutiny by lawmakers.

The report adds that a majority of the contracts were given to supporters of County Executive Ed Mangano's campaign.

The system was spotlighted when former NYPD Detective Bo Dietl got two contracts for just under the $25,000-limit.

Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos says that a checks-and-balance system is in place for paid invoices and that Dietl was not paid after review of his contract.

A statement from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano's administration in part says, "The $25,000 legislative threshold predates the Mangano administration. All contracts not subject to legislative approval are noticed on the Legislature's agenda where they are free to be questioned. Additionally, all amendments that exceed the legislative threshold are sent to the Legislature for its approval."
