WOODBURY - A report is spooking election officials this Halloween.

A Newsday report found that more than 6,000 current registered voters in Nassau County are dead, more than any other county in the state. The report also says that 270 of those people voted in elections after they died.

Nassau County Democratic Elections Commissioner William Biamonte disputes those numbers. He also says voters themselves are to blame most of the time because they often mistakenly sign on the wrong line in the voting ledger, registering their vote to someone else.

Why would a deceased person still be on the voter roll to begin with? Biamonte says the county Board of Elections mails out voter check cards and works to obtain death certificates, but he admits it’s an "imperfect" system.
