WOODBURY - A News 12/Hofstra poll revealed that 37 percent of Long Islanders feel Nassau and Suffolk police are overpaid.

The poll found that 43 percent think police salaries are fair, while 8 percent say they're paid too little.

The starting salary for police in Suffolk is $42,000. Pay rises to $58,596 after three years, and to $70,354 after five.

Base pay in Nassau is $34,695. After three years of service, salaries go up to $68,222. Salaries jump to $79,209 at five years.

There were no significant differences in responses between Nassau and Suffolk residents. However, there were notable gender differences. The poll revealed that 51 percent of men say that police officers make too much, while only 29 percent of women share that opinion.
